Project background

The idea for aria came about when artist Zineb Sedira met international artists who expressed an interest in visiting Algeria and who felt that its history, politics, and landscape were connected to their artistic practice.

Yet many felt uncomfortable visiting the country. As little is known about contemporary Algeria, the country is unfairly chained to memories of its civil war (1991-2002), whose violence continues to monopolise Algeria’s international representations. Additionally, given the lack of tourism, infrastructures are scarce and costly.

Zineb Sedira founded aria to provide a framework for guests artists to explore common areas of practice, new connections, and collaborations with local colleagues, communities, and institutions in Algiers and beyond.

aria started as a one-year pilot project hosting two guest artists in 2012.

aria would like to express its gratitude to Aaron Cezar at The Delfina Foundation for his valuable advice and his constant support.
